Disaster: 500,000-Gallon Sewage Spill Mess Up Hawaii Beach
The 500,000-gallon sewage spill, however, was a major issue.
Lifeguards cautioned beachgoers to stay out of the sea along a couple of miles of shoreline Monday in light of the fact that wastewater had streamed out of sewer vents amid overwhelming rain overnight, the city's Department of Environmental Services and CNN offshoot Hawaii News Now reported.
"I was coming down to have a swim, however I think I may pass now," Smith, clad in a dark swimming outfit with a towel behind her, told Hawaii News Now. "It doesn't appear like heaven when you believe that there could be nasties coasting in it."
City authorities said more than 500,000 gallons of wastewater got away from sewer vents in the Hawaiian capital's Waikiki neighborhood and entered tempest channels driving into the sea. The getaway was encouraged by individuals who had unlawfully opened the sewer vents to allay flooding amid overwhelming precipitation, Hawaii News Now reported.
