That is the issue the group of previous France worldwide Jean-Pierre Adams, whose life was mercilessly flipped around in 1982, asks itself consistently on key commemorations.
Thirty-three years prior the burly footballer, then 34, strolled into a Lyon healing facility for some normal surgery to amend a troublesome knee.
When he cleared out, he would never talk, walk or move any of his appendages again.
His wife Bernadette has tended to him following the time when, scarcely missing a day's consideration in the course of the most recent three decades.
"Nobody ever neglects to give Jean-Pierre presents, whether it's his birthday, Christmas or Father's Day," Bernadette told CNN.
