A 7-year-old was handcuffed over $5 then interrogated for 10 hours,
the boy's parents allege in their $250 million claim against New York
City police. According to an ABC Local
report Jan. 30, Wilson Reyes allegedly stole $5 from another student
after punching him in the face. His mother, Frances Mendez, said he was
detained and "interrogated" for 10 hours on Dec. 4.
Family attorney, Jack Yankowitz, said that the 7-year-old was
arrested held at a Bronx station for four hours then was transferred to a
precinct house and held there another six hours. He was charged with
robbery.
The city reportedly dropped the charges on Dec. 26 and a spokesman
declined to comment on the incident. School officials also said
everything happened off school grounds.
In a report published by the Christian Post, another student admitted to stealing the $5 from another student.
As for the lawsuit document it reads, "Reyes was handcuffed and
verbally, physically and emotionally abused, intimidated, humiliated,
embarrassed and defamed."
The boy's mother claim she wasn't able to see her son while he was
being held. She went on to say that he was seated in a chair with his
left hand cuffed to the wall.
"I never imagined the cops could do that to a child. We're traumatized," she said.
